About Council
In April 2022, Marion Council received $6 million in Federal Government funding to upgrade the more than 50 year old Marion Basketball Stadium. Following careful consideration, the Council has decided to replace the ageing facility at Norfolk Road with a new, modern stadium that will better serve the community.
At the General Council meeting on 27 February 2024, the Council identified the best course of action was constructing a five-court basketball stadium. Consultation was undertaken on the initial site plan and layout. In July 2024 endorsement was received by Council members to proceed with site investigation and design works.
Subsequently, at the General Council meeting on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, members endorsed a revised proposal to build a four-court stadium instead of the initial five-court design due to site and budget constraints. This new four-court facility will replace the existing ageing two-court venue at Norfolk Road, Marion. The overarching principle being to maximise public spaces for the good of the community.
Council staff have since developed a site plan for the new stadium, along with associated car parking at the Norfolk Road site.
Community consultation concluded in May 2025 and the concept design has been endorsed.
At this stage, we are considering relocating the Marion Tennis Club to the southern side of the precinct, at the old croquet club site, with the potential for four new courts to be constructed.
