Things to do
Volunteers like Dan are the heart of our community, contributing more than a million dollars in equivalent value annually to the City of Marion.
Dan is a dedicated member of the Friends of Upper Field River, displaying his involvement with the community, by balancing his career in the environmental field with his passion for volunteering.
He conducts bird surveys, manages the Friends of Upper Field River social media, and captures stunning wildlife photographs, which have been featured in the Biodiversity Plan 2024-2029.
When he was asked about his journey into volunteering, Dan shared,
“I really like the idea of being meaningfully involved in the local community and helping our natural areas along.”
After moving to Trott Park, Dan discovered the Friends of Upper Field River while walking his dog. He noticed a sign at the local revegetation patch and connected with the group’s leader, Sam.
A bush care workshop with Trees for Life solidified his interest, and he was soon actively participating in the group’s efforts.
“So far the experience has been great,” he says. “I have learnt loads, met some great people, and feel the council does a lot to support volunteers.”
Dan’s wildlife photography journey is a natural extension of his love for nature.
“I’ve always enjoyed photography, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve had a real curiosity and love for nature,” he explains.
Although the cost of quality telephoto lenses was initially a barrier, he eventually invested in the right equipment and hasn’t looked back since.
His photographs not only showcase the beauty of the local environment but also inspire others to appreciate and protect it.

For Dan, volunteering is about more than just giving back; it’s about gaining as well.
“It’s funny, I don’t really feel like it’s volunteering,” he reflects. “My time with the group has given me so much in the form of learning, friendships, and rich experiences.”
Seeing the tangible results of his efforts, like trees and shrubs flourishing and wildlife returning to restored habitats, is incredibly rewarding.
He also values the opportunity to involve his children in planting days, teaching them the importance of caring for natural spaces.
“I like the idea that I am putting my time into an activity that benefits everyone and that everyone can enjoy.”
Volunteering with the City of Marion offers countless opportunities to gain skills, build friendships, and make a difference in areas like environmental care, community programs, and events.
