The Marion Cultural Centre (MCC) Plaza has been officially opened with thousands turning out to the new hub in the heart of the city over the weekend.

Mayor of Marion Kris Hanna cut the ribbon to mark the occasion followed by hours of fun entertainment for families showing off the flexibility of the new outdoor space.

Best-selling children author Mem Fox was one of the highlights of the event as she delivered the first public reading of her new book Meerkat Mayhem.

The crowd was also treated to a reading of her classics 'Possum Magic' and 'Where is the Green Sheep?'.

Following her time on stage, Ms Fox signed books for about two hours inside the MCC Library.

There was also a science show which had the children hanging on every experiment.

The event was capped off with performance from mr.theduo and Pulse band who had the crowd signing and dancing into the early evening.

Mayor Hanna said the plaza would be a perfect place for markets, concerts and events.

"If you haven't explored it yet, come on down to the Marion Cultural Centre and see what we've done to this wonderful plaza," he said.

The MCC Plaza project – fully-funded by Marion Council – has improved pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, amenity and safety through the area.

It has improved linkages between the local residential areas, the Oaklands Station, MCC, SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC), Westfield shopping centre and other facilities on Milham Street.

Designs were developed by Outerspace Landscape Architects, MLEI Engineers, Lucid, Stantec and Pinata.

Outside Ideas were contracted to develop the space so it can be utilised for community events and provide improved amenity for community use between the MCC and the SAALC.

The space has historically hosted several Marion Celebrates and Fringe Festival events which have been well attended.

The plans build upon the recent Oaklands Station redevelopment and streetscape upgrade that have supported community connections to key services in the area.
