Marion Council is pleased to announce it has found a new home for the Marion Tennis Club on the Sturt Rd side of the Marion Sports Precinct.

In February, Marion Council endorsed a proposal to build a new 5 court basketball stadium at Norfolk Road.

The design footprint will encapsulate the site currently leased by the Marion Tennis Club.

Council have negotiated with the Marion Tennis Club in good faith in an effort to find a resolution for its members.

At Tuesday night’s Special General Council meeting, Council endorsed a proposal to build four tennis courts on the southern side of the former croquet club site.

The existing clubhouse will be repurposed for the tennis club and lighting will be installed.

While Marion Council and the community were disappointed the Marion Ice Arena was unable to go ahead, it has created an opportunity to provide a local community sporting club a new home.

“I think we’ve aced it. We’re guaranteeing a home for the Marion Tennis Club for the next generation,” Mayor of Marion Kris Hanna said.

“They’ve got an improved clubhouse and four courts in the Marion Sports Precinct which is exactly where they said they wanted to be.”

The future use of the northern area of the site is yet to be discussed.

This proposal has been presented to the Marion Tennis Club committee who will have until 17 January, 2025 to accept or reject the offer.

“This is a great result for tennis, the Marion community and our club’s 200 odd members” Marion Tennis Club President Kym Morgan said.

“On behalf of the club I sincerely thank the council’s elected members for voting to relocate us within the Marion Sports and Community Precinct, which has been our home for generations.”
