About Council
A new playground and reserve has opened in Plympton Park to the delight of nearby residents.
Hundreds gathered at Elizabeth Ryan Reserve, at Herbert Street, as it was officially opened to the community on Saturday.
The upgrades to the reserve include a new playground, landscaping and irrgation upgrades, artworks, historical signage as well as new seating.
The project was fully funded by the City of Marion.
In an odd, yet fitting coincidence, the reserve was opened on the 97th anniversary of its namesakes passing, Elizabeth Ryan.
Ms Ryan was a pioneer of the Marion district throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. She gave back her local community through the organisation of many social and fundraising events for charities.
Her great-granddaughters, Janet and Mary, recently travelled from WA to research their family history at Marion’s Heritage Centre
Although they couldn't join the City of Marion for the opening, their recent visit reflects the lasting impact of Ms Ryan’s story.
The Plympton Glenelg RSL sub-branch contributed to a seat on the reserve which has a Lifeline message: “Just wait for the sun.”
This message was provided by Lifeline staff to support those facing mental health challenges.
The City of Marion thanks the Plympton Glenelg RSL and Lifeline for their contribution, message and donation.
Ella Germain was responsible for the amazing mural which references nursery rhymes and children’s songs.
The Little Library is new feature to the reserve thanks to our friends at the Trott Park Men’s Shed
They have generously donated their time to refurbish this box.
The idea of a little library is simple. You can either leave your own books or take a book to read.
