About Council
The proposed 5-court basketball stadium to be built at Norfolk Road will soon become a visual reality after Marion Council awarded the design tender for the project.
Studio Nine Architects have begun work on concept designs for the exciting project after a contract was signed last month.
It is anticipated designs will be completed and ready for public consultation in early-2025 giving residents an opportunity to provide feedback.
Construction is expected to commence in 2026.
The Marion Basketball Stadium will be the biggest sporting project the Council has embarked on in its history.
This is another significant milestone in the Marion Basketball Stadium project. We are excited to see the concept designs from Studio Nine Architects early next year," Mayor of Marion Kris Hanna said.
The project has been made possible thanks to Member for Boothby Louise Miller-Frost and the Australian Government delivering on a $6 million funding commitment under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program to assist in constructing this much-needed facility in Adelaide’s south.
"This project would not have been possible without funding from the Australian Government and we thank them for fulfilling their election promise," Mayor Hanna said.
The South Adelaide Basketball Club (SABC) has been lobbying for a new facility to meet the needs of its 2259 membership base.
The club currently utilises 31 indoor courts per week and only 7 are at council-owned facilities.
SABC has forecast growth projections outlining the potential to increase its membership numbers to over 6000 players in 10 years' time.
The existing Marion Basketball Stadium is over 50 years old and no longer meets the functional requirements of the sport.
Council staff will work with SABC to develop a preferred management model and lease arrangement for the new stadium.
