The City of Marion has released a first-look at concept designs for a proposed 4-court Marion Basketball Stadium earmarked to replace the 50-year-old facility at Norfolk Road.

Marion Council endorsed the concept plans for public consultation, including a budget of $30 million-plus, which will open on Monday.

Residents will have an opportunity to view the designs – by Studio Nine Architects - and provide feedback about the initial scope of the project.

The feedback will be presented to Council in May and, if endorsed, more detailed designs will be prepared in the second half of the year.

Construction is expected to commence in 2026.

The project has been made possible thanks to the Australian Government delivering on a $6 million funding commitment under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program to assist in constructing this much-needed facility in Adelaide’s south.

The South Adelaide Basketball Club (SABC) has been lobbying for a new facility to meet the needs of over 2000 members.

The club currently utilises 31 indoor courts per week and only 7 are at council-owned facilities.

The existing Marion Basketball Stadium is over 60 years old and no longer meets the functional requirements of the sport.

Council staff will work with SABC to develop a preferred management model and lease arrangement for the new stadium.

The new basketball facility would be located on the Marion Sports Precinct which is currently home to at least 12 sports and organisations and is situated right in the heart of the City of Marion.

The new basketball facility will see the Marion Tennis Club relocated to the southern side of the precinct at the old croquet club site. Four new courts will be constructed.

There is also good news for cricket with Marion Council agreeing to contribute to new practice nets if the club can secure a grant from the state government.

We are excited to reveal the concept design for a proposed Marion Basketball Stadium which would replace the old facility at Norfolk Road.

We look forward to hearing what the community thinks of the plans.
